Einstein's general theory of relativity is widely considered to be one of the most elegant and successful scientific theories ever developed, and it is increasingly being taught in a simplified form at advanced undergraduate level within both physics and mathematics departments. Due to the increasing interest in gravitational physics, in both the academic and the public sphere, driven largely by widely-publicised developments such as the recent observations of gravitational waves, general relativity is also one of the most popular scientific topics pursued through self-study. Modern General Relativity introduces the reader to the general theory of relativity using an example-based approach, before describing some of its most important applications in cosmology and astrophysics, such as gamma-ray bursts, neutron stars, black holes, and gravitational waves. With hundreds of worked examples, explanatory boxes, and end-of-chapter problems, this textbook provides a solid foundation for understanding one of the towering achievements of twentieth-century physics.

Modern General Relativity Black Holes Gravitational Waves and Cosmology Mike Guidry 9781107197893 Books Reviews

  • I have just started to read Guidry's textbook, having already
made serious attempts to read other recent textbooks
on general relativity such as those of Tai-Pei Cheng, Hartle,
Schutz, D'Inverno, Zee, and Carroll, for example.

So far I am impressed by the contents of Guidry's book, including
superb writing and a lack of typographical errors.

    Some of its features include

    1. A collection of 259 references in the back of the book.
    2. Care about the the use of natural units.
    3. A clear comment about the breakdown of the principle of global conservation
of energy in general relativity because of the difficult of accounting
    for gravitational energy.
    4. An up-to-date summary of the current standard model, including recent
calculations of the evolution of the universe (13.8 Gyr) using recent
    benchmark parameters.
    5. Two chapters devoted to gravitational waves.
    6. Helpful footnotes.
    7. Homework problems with partial solutions (PDF)
on the Cambridge Univ. Press website.

One problem for people like me with poor eyesight the font used in this book is
about 10 percent smaller than the 11-point type one sees in physics textbooks.

Guidry's book contains 598 pages, so this is only a first impression
    but so far, so good.
