Conscience in Recovery from Drug Addiction A Theoretical and Empirical Study of Spiritual Conscientious Transformation for the Formulation of Conscience Therapy edition by Yordan Kalev Zhekov N Xavier Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

  • There can be little doubt that addiction and spirituality are strongly connected. Lack of spiritual fulfilment is often listed among the circumstances leading to substance abuse and eventually dependence. Also, individuals recovering from addictions often mention spirituality as a helpful factor in the healing process. Acknowledging these links, therapists have begun asking whether and how spirituality can be incorporated into the formal treatment of addictions, and that in a manner that is sensitive to the particularities of the individuals being assisted. Dr. Yordan Zhekov’s book tackles these questions anew by helpfully detailing how conscience, understood as the force operating at the very core of one’s personal moral framework, can enable the patient to carry on with responsibilities to self, life and others. Hence, this study argues that conscience is the key to successful recovery from addiction. As for its integration with addiction therapy, the discussion provides both the method to identify the state of one’s conscience through narrative analysis and the path to positive transformation through enlightenment, empowerment and edification. Given all these, and more, students, therapists and researchers will all benefit from Dr. Zhekov’s insights into conscience therapy.
  • Dr. Yordan Kalev Zhekov has written a timely and important book that will add to our existing understanding of addiction and recovery. Filling a gap in previous research, Dr. Zhekov has provided a detailed study into the role of conscience and its influences through spiritually transformative experiences in the recovery process. Using the narrative analysis tools of qualitative research, Yordan has delved deeply and compassionately into the lives of six men whose stories unfold as complex, yet parallel in many ways, as they struggle, sometimes with setbacks and relapses, but eventually experience recovery, not only from addiction, but also a recovery of conscience. In the end Dr. Zhekov has developed a new methodology of treatment that holds great promise. This is a crucial time for this new methodology. I'm writing from the United States where the opioid crisis is raging, claiming the lives of thousands, destroying families, and creating a foster care nightmare, we are desperately in the need of new methodologies.
