Making Rooms Your Own Lessons from Interior Designers Editors of New York Social Diary Sian Ballen Lesley Hauge Jeff Hirsch David Patrick Columbia 9780847866335 Books Reviews

  • This book provides a close-up, intimate peek into the "at home" lives of more than 30 prominent interior designers. While this would be a lovely addition to a cocktail table, I found it to be much more than that. The short introduction to each designer provides a brief bio, but not the date-oriented, timeline kind. You do learn a little information about the designer's background, but other details vary and might include how a designer's workday begins, perhaps a favorite word, a description of a design project undertaken in early youth, a risk taken, and sometimes, a much-regretted design choice.
Some photos capture aspects of rooms in their entirety, while other photos focus on the smaller touches that can transform a living space into a welcoming home (a well-stocked bar, side tables arranged with photos, mementos, etc.).
Several of the designers have cherished pets, and the photographer has captured the unique cuteness of each one.
In the Q+A sections I found lots of ideas that would inspire anyone to perhaps take a small design risk that might provide a refreshing change to a room and maybe even a life style.
  • Such a great look at the behind the scenes world of some of New York's top interior designers - full of glossy pictures of their own homes with lots of details to inspire. I love the format of the full page introduction to each designer and the two page Q&A section that follows - together with the pictures you get an intimate peek into their lives and a remarkable understanding of their design philosophies, their personal passions and how they use their beautiful homes. And if you want encouragement to be brave in your own home or with your own clients - look to the Q&A's and read the 31 answers to "What's a design risk worth taking?"!
  • I particularly liked this book because it is interesting to compare all the different designer styles in one place - you can get a sense of their personalities. It is less of a “formal” design book, but still covers a lot of ground, and the Q and As are fun to read. This book is very worthwhile!
  • It is one thing for interior designers to tell you how your rooms should look, but the greater and more insightful truth, is found in the homes they themselves actually live in. This marvelous book opens that inner door, and we discover a very personal world of decorating, as dozens of famous interior designers, show you their homes. A wonderful journey of discovery, with resplendent photography and on point writing.
  • This exquisitely produced book delights on every page with aesthetic pleasure and wonderful ideas on decorating. Now I want to go back and redecorate every room!
  • Just ordered rhis book after seeing it at a friend's house. Totally worth having as a reference book for creatively organizing my rooms.
  • Great value for money and lovely, personal photos including cute pics of the designers’ pets. I did feel like I had been invited in to their apartments.
  • Love this book! I know nothing about design but this book gave me a better understanding to begin forming my own tastes and opinions. Highly recommend.
